By question 2b of the second minitest, while deriving the eigenvalues , we take the square root of the second term , so should we not end up with the absolute value of the second term?
Yes, that is possible, but it leads to complicated eigenvectors. One can ignore the absolute value as the \pm does the same job (plot E_\pm using abs and without, you should see that they lead to the same bands).
